It's always a good idea to keep an original copy. Plus there is usually a copy of the original in the Bitmap Gallery.

In the attached, I romoved part of photo. Saved the file, closed Xara.

Reopened Xara, opened the closed document, and in the Bitmap Gallery is the unedited image.

Actually No that's not completely true. This thread is/was about the background erase tool. After you use the background erase button on the eraser tool infobar if you save your document and close the program you will see that the original photo is no longer in the bitmap gallery because the program no longer retains it in it's memory.

I always make a copy for editing or drag my photo into a print document. That way I know I'll always have an original unedited version.

Why? With print or web docs the original on your HDD is untouched unless you deliberately export as the same bitmap type and use the same name in the same location.
Ctrl+S on't do this unless (as PeteS confirms), when using a Blank Photo document, in which case a masters folder is created with a (backup) copy of the bitmap you opened for editing.
In any other doc ctrl+s will just prompt to save as the native file format for the version of Designer you are using.

I mostly use print documents in Xara that way I know my original is on my HDD untouched. If I'm opening my photo directly (into a photo document) then I make sure there is a back up just in case.

Most features when applied to images are non-destructive (ie the original bitmap is retained in the Bitmap Gallery) - things such as using the Eraser Tool, Combine Shapes, Transparency, Clipping, Photo Enhance, Photo Heal, Clone, Magic Erase, Colour Select/Erase. Probably more.

However Background Erase and Optimise Images are destructive which means that once you've made these edits to the bitmap, save the document and close it (assuming you are not using the same bitmap elsewhere in the document) then the original bitmap will be deleted from the file because it's no longer used. Of course the original bitmap will still be stored on your file system.

Photo Documents are different as my previous post and others since have clarified.

The thing about the Blank Photo Doc is unlike web or print docs, imported/drag'n'dropped photos are not resized by the program.
