Line sometimes doesn't close

I'm sure this has been answered before but I couldn't find it.
Sometimes when I use the freehand or shape tool to outline an object I want to cut out it doesn't turn black. I have magnified the objects before looking for a possible break in the line but don't ever find one. So I usually just end up reloading the photo and usually have success which is a pain. I thought at first I had to many points and had exceeded some kind of limit but that didn't seem to help.

Any and all answers dumb or otherwise appreciated.

Select the path with the Selector Tool the switch to the Shape Tool (or Shape Editor Tool in earlier versions).

Press the Tab key once. The start point will be highlighted as a red outlined square.

If you press Enter, the path will automatically be closed.
