I think your shadows in the last image are spot-on, Rik, and your method of posing some similar objects and then taking a photo is a great way to see what shadows are cast and where. However, if you want to take that a step further, get yourself a free 3D rendering program. You don't need to learn how to model because there are thousands of free objects available online, you just need to know how to position them, position different light sources and then render the output to an image file. I have used TrueSpace on occasion to help me determine the correct or otherwise position and intensity of shadow I have drawn. It's an enlightening experience.
Try Blender (I have never used it but there's people on here that know it): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blender_%28software%29
Try TrueSpace, a fully fledged 3D app which is completely free: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TrueSpace

Thanks for your comments and suggestions, Beret.
I've thought about 3D rendering programmes myself. I'm sure I tried Blender and just could not see how to use it.
I'll try TruSpace and see if I get any results from it.
Thanks again.

Most 3D apps require a fairly steep learning curve - but TrueSpace has been around for years and there's a very active forum community plus there are people on here in the 3D forum who know it. Try it, once you get past the fairly imposing gui, you can start having fun!
