page loading times & images

Im building an image heavy page of photos. Is there any advantage / disadvantage between mouse-over layers and pop-up photos when it comes to page loading times?

I know I can optimise the images, but still Im going to have a page of thumbnails - so they need larger versions also just thinking the best way to address it. Thanks for any advice

I'm pretty sure all the images are loaded with the page so there will be no advantage.
