WOOT where this deal was advertised is one of those deals of the day companies that was bought out a while back by Amazon.

They employ a bunch of young smart asses as copywriters and I like to visit the site not only for the deals but to read the stuff these kids are writing and getting away with. Nothing terribly risqué just in my advertising days you had to get your copy approved by the client and the clients often did not have the same sense of humor as the creative people.

Show of hands, who remembers Tahiti discs and drives?

You may remember WORM (Write Once Read Many) discs and drives.

I once worked for a company that stored their backup data on that media. Drives and discs were very reliable even after 12 years of storage. The problem we encountered is some sites did not update their backup data when the OS was updated. The newer OSs could not find all records as the database formats had been extended over the years.

Each OS update included an application for making a new backup set of the previous versions' media. This worked well until you had replaced older mainframes before making your backup media updates. The update process was time consuming and expensive but easier than trying to explain to the client and the corporate CEO why you must send your backup media to the Software Development Division to make them readable by the latest OS.
