Hope there's someone here who can help!

Whenever I use Xara X for more than a few hours, and try to select the font icon - the program just crashes immediately and gives me one of those error messages http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

When I try to restart the program, the same thing happens when I click on the font icon (or open a document containing text), and the only solution seems to be a system reboot.

Has anyone gotten this error and know of a way to fix this?

Also another problem I get (if the program has no yet crashed) is occasionally when I try to change text to a different font, xara keeps telling me that the font I have selected "is not installed" or something like that, even though the font IS installed.

I tried to refresh my windows font folder thru windows explorer but again the only current solution to fix the problem seems to be doing a system reset.

    Anyone have any ideas

My first idea is to uninstall XaraX and then install with the latest patches. MY Xara runs very well on my updatad Win 2000. Be sure that your PC runs well and is updated.

    Hi Oystein

actually I am using the latest version 1.0d (from CD), and the patches I checked were for 1.0b and 1.0c only.

I have done a clean re-install but still have the same issues http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

    Any other suggestions?

    Hi G-Bot,

Which version of Windows are you using? How many fonts do you have installed? If you are using Win95/98/ME you may have too many fonts installed. If you are using Win2K/XP you may have a corrupt font file. It is also possible you have two files that have the same internal font name. These are a few possibilities that come to mind.

    Hi Soquili,

I am running win98. I have about 900 fonts installed. Is that too many? All my other graphics software work perfectly so I'm not sure why it would effect xara only. Do you know if there is a way I can check with files with the same internal font name?

    Hi G-Bot,

Microsoft says that Win98 can have up to 1000 fonts, but they also say that depends on the length of the font names and the filenames. If the filenames average 10 charactors in length and the font names average about 20 characters then you can have 1000 fonts. If the names average more characters then you will be able to have fewer fonts installed.

When you use the Fonts applet in Control Panel to view your fonts, it displays the internal font names, not the filenames. If you see two identical names, you have two different filenames with the same internal font name. Windows will not let you install two filenames that are identical but it will allow to font names to be the same. This caused me some difficulty at one time, and took a long time to track down due to the large number of fonts I had installed.

I think XaraX is more prone to font related problems because it relies heavily on the registry entries for fonts. With 900 fonts installed on Win98 you may have surpassed the 64K registry limit.

No problem with Xara or any other app, on Win98.

I decided that 650 was all that I would install, so I keep my other fonts organized into categories (folders) in another folder for when I might need them. If I need to view or use those extra fonts I just copy them into the Windows Fonts folder until I am done, then I delete them.

How often does a person use fonts like Taco Salad or Acid Corrosion anyway? http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

    g-bot,

Yes, 900 fonts is too many. While you can install more, as I recall the *practical* limit on a win9X setup is around 450 before you start slowing the system down and having stability issues. I would recommend 200 or less be installed at any given time.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I've removed about 400 fonts, so I have roughly 500 installed right now...

I'll check to see if the problem continues, but hopefully it will work and not crash again http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
