i'm just trying to find information on designer mx premium and find conflicting numbers of templates the software offers, from 40 to 600. Looks like there are around 40 themes, but are the layouts the same with simple color changes or similar, or are they actually different templates within a theme? I really need to start simple first and the more options the better.

Each set of templates has one theme with a different variations. For example one template page is set up as a home page, another is set up as an about us, or a gallery, or contact or other configurations. So, you can change the page by merely replacing the text and photos, or you can rearrange the entire template.
