These car images?

Just read the June 2012 issue of the Outsider. These car images are amazing!

Now I wonder: How do people make them?

I am especially interested in the outlines / the vector mesh. I assume that the artists either trace a photo, a basic 3D rendering, or a pen and paper drawing. Or is anyone actually constructing car drawings all from inside of Xara (with vanishing points, etc.)?

I suspect that most members trace an existing photograph to create vector shapes.
