trouble with 5 step blend

I've done this before and it worked fine. Now I'm having problems trying it again. I'm trying to do a 5 step blend and my lines get all jumbled up instead of fanning out even like they should. Can you help me figure out what's causing this? You will see what I mean by looking at the screen shot. I can send more info if you need it. The first shot is the actual tutorial. The second one is the way mine is turning out. Thanks.

Your lines are not mapping correctly. Once you have created the blend, drag again from two of the same end points

I tried that over and over and always got the result you are looking for no matter how I drug from point a to point b . Please submit your xar file, so we can better help. From what I tried the instructions seem to be in the wrong order. Maybe I'm wrong but from my trials ungroup before converting line to shape. When I did it in the sequence shown on your post every time I did that I got a black shape that would not ungroup.

I've done this tut before and I believe I remember running into some problems then. Update: I have the 5 step blend done now by doing what Gary said to do, dragging again from the points. Now this is where I got stuck last time. It seems to already be grouped so when I arrange/convert to editable shapes, then arrange/convert line to shape, the next step is to ungroup, but ungroup is grayed out. I tried what Wizard509 said and it worked, too. So I have to make a note to do it that way every time I do the tut. I really like this tut and plan to make a whole flock of chickens. lol! We can now mark this one solved. Thanks for all the help.
