Well there is a way to use a named image and a JS randomiser script to select the image for the layer each time it is loaded.
But it would be a lot of fooling around for small return.

That seems very good but, as you say, a fair bit of work for a relatively small return. Do you think they would have hand coded the example on the web site or could they have used a flash slideshow program (I've been toying with the idea of getting one but haven't decided yet - and haven't seen one that does this particular effect.

My guess is it is created from scratch.

But why not take some time and see what you can come up with on your own using the elegant example you posted as inspiration and not as a template.

I tried my own suggestion linking the home page link to a new layer each time but I was not thrilled with the results so I have not posted it here.
