Just to add my experience yesterday.

I created a geological cross-section comprised of adjacent geological layers. The geo-layers were meandering and some were quite narrow. Each geo-layer was either a group or a clip-group. Selecting narrow geo-layers surrounded by other geo-layers was usually not possible with the mouse (particularly if they had outlines and no files), whether or not I used the Outline or HighQuality View modes. Editing groups and clip-groups but right-clicking on them was impacted as well.

I had to use the layer gallery for selecting; however, depending on the stacking order of geo-layers, there was a lot of trial and error picking the correct geo-layer. Using the LOCATE mode helped a bit, but I wound up having to reorder the stacking order of the geo-layers.

    Regards, John

P.S. If names applied to objects were viewable in the Page Layer Gallery as an option that would have helped a lot in identifying the correct object to click on in Page and Layers Gallery.
