    thanks Rik

if you want the lighter pasteboard too and the small icons back you will also need to rename file xaradark_theme - this will mean your bars may need repositioning, but they will not be reset as far as I can see

This is so easy, that I must be missing something.
Open a new blank page, right click on the background area, choose change background color. Make your choice, then save as a template. No need to play with the registry.

    yes

but if you are renaming one file you might as well do two, and then you get the small icons as well as the light interface

in fact in theory you can get away with renaming the theme file only and do the lot in one go [though your bars will then be small icons and therefore offset]

** Disclaimer: don't do any file renaming at all unless you are sure what you are doing, as Rik said, and are prepared for and able to deal with any unforseen 'interesting times'

The title is 'Changing the user interface colour'
So, if I've read that correctly, then the question isn't about changing the background (behind the working page) but about the light or the dark interface.
Post #2 said to do 'CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+s'
Which only confirmed my assumption even more and that's when I decided to give the answer that I did.

    Hey! I could have misunderstood?!

EDIT: Just to make things clear, I assume that we are talking about the dark and light interfaces shown in the attached picture?!

we moved on Rik, because to go back to how things were you need the 'full monty' - not just the UI skin itself

Fantastic! I renamed both the Xara files (just added xxx to each) and the interface was light when I restarted. The left hand tool bar icons were tiny but I corrected this by going to window/control bars and choosing large icons for the left hand side.
Thank you all so much for your help! I can see clearly now.
