    Default strange... missing feature

i do quite a bit of graphic design, but for websites, photo editing etc. not much 3d stuff.

but I needed a spinning logo, and I've owned Xara 3d since 2005. Actually before that. Xara bought the software from another company in 05 i think.

in previous versions i could apply 'material' to my objects. eg: shiny chrome, matte black etc. But taht feature is gone.

so if you wanted to make something metallic, how would you do that now?

I think you are confusing Ulead Cool 3D and Xara 3D. Xara 3D has been around for more than a decade. I bought Xara 3D 3 in 2000.

ULead's Cool 3D was dropped after Corel bought ULead. You may be able to find Cool 3D on eBay.

Cool 3D version 3.5 was the last release and offered many metallic textures.

If you are using Vista or Windows 7 the ULead installer for Cool 3D will not work. I tried running in compatibility mode and that did not help, the installer reports it cannot continue and exits.

nope, not confused. it was actually available from the MAGIX site then that changed in version 6 in 2005 to Xara 3d. i just dind't realize xara is owned by MAGIX.

anyway, still looking for the answer to the question if anyone knows. it was definitely there in previous versions

EDIT: actually now i know why i thought it was a different company. it was. MAGIX bought Xara in 2007 and it was created by magix originally.

Magix may have had a similar product before the merger with Xara in 2007.

You can achieve a metallic look by selecting colors for the 3 lights so they produce highlights that simulate metal.

not sure why you're so adamant. you're incorrect. it didn't loook similar, it was the exact same software. it looked back before xara exactly like it does right now. it has never changed (other than obvious new features etc).

so the answer is, you can't do what you used to be able to with it. thank you.

I have used Xara 3D since version 3 which I bought direct from Xara in 2000. I never heard of Magix until after their merger with Xara in 2007.

Xara 3D Maker was developed by Xara and first released in 1997

Never heard of a MAGIX application like this which pre-dates Xara's software?

I have to agree with Bill and Steve. I don't remember which version I started with but they have all been similar in many respects. Previously I owned Cool 3D but didn't like it as much as Xara3D. I also had not heard of Magix predating Xara's software. Corel yes but not Magix. However to the best of my knowledge Corel did not have a dedicated 3D program.o

Magix had an online only version of Xara's 3D application back in late 2007. That was before they decided to remarket the Xara apps with their name.

I think the Import Style option of the File menu may be what you are thinking about FastNOC. I've become so accustomed to making things my own way it did not occur to me at the time.
