What happens if you use a rectangle for the button shape. It can be the same color as the background.

And did you make a soft group?

yh it works ok with a rectangle - i am sure it used to work without a rectangle in WD 7 - they must have changed it :-(

Yes, it used to be (up to version 7) you could simply group (not soft group) the MouseOff text object (to itself) then copy to MouseOver, then a Navbar could be made from it.
Smells like a bug to me...

I just tried it in WD7 and it does not make a nav bar unless you soft group theh two groups. Can you verify that?

Actually, nothing is needed on the MouseOver layer Gary, unless you want a mouseover effect of course, but it isn't required to get a navbar working.
No need to softgroup the two layers either.

    Steps in WD7 and DP7

[1] Create a text word on the MouseOff layer eg; PRODUCTS
    [2] Group it to itself
    [3] Arrange>>Create Navbar

    Create sub items as normal.
So, the problem is - you can't do this in MX now. This means a retrograde step and loss of compatibility.

Here's a quick How-To to explain the above.
