    I just created a brand new page, tried the shortcut way to the favicon using a different larger .jpg file and it worked exactly as you guys advertised. It must have had something to do with the specific items I was working with on those other pages.

    Now why didn't I try that yesterday..??!!

    Again your help was appreciated.

    OK guys, something to mull over.

    On the test page that is mentioned above just for drill I decided to try to change the favicon that had worked per instructions.
    In Xara I deleted the original .jpg
    inserted a new .jpg
    named it favicon
    saved
    published
    upon opening the webpage on the internet the original favicon appeared
    refreshed, still the original favicon
    =============
    next I went to the server HTML and removed the 3 lines of code from the .htm file for the original favicon that was still in the <head>
    upon opening the webpage on the internet the original favicon still appeared
    if web page "view" and "source" are looked at, the favicon info does not appear in the HTML

    ============
    where do you suppose the information on the original favicon is coming from?

    ===============
    this issue has to be why I had so much trouble getting a favicon up in the first place

    It is coming from the caché, probably the web server caché. You can refresh your local browser but you cannot do so reliably to the server's caché.

    Patience is the only thing you have control over at this point.

    Thanks. Every day I learn how little I know.

    If server cache is slow it really hurts in even basic design steps

    Comercial, it is "iPage".

    I contacted them and they suggested that I manually dump my cache and cookies. After doing that the change in the favicon appeared. I had of course refreshed the page a number of times but aparently something in cache or cookie files was causing the problem.
