Frances are you saying the laptop stops charging and you remove the battery to make it charge further?

The next time you take the battery out see if you can find the manufacturing date. A lithium-ion battery can lose 20% of it's ability to charge for every year since it was manufactured.

Three things everyone should know about lithium-ion batteries:

Frances' battery fully discharged, but was reluctant to recharge.

Paul she did not say if the battery fully charged then she removed the charger and continued to use the laptop to consume some of the charge then attempts to recharge.

Facts must be present before a solution can be found. I am attempting to obtain all the facts.

I know how to find the Device Manager but I'm not sure what I need to uninstall and once I uninstall it where do I re install it from? Will I have to download a new driver of some sort? If some one could give me some easy to follow instructions the help would be much appreciated
Paul perhaps you did not notice she is still having some problems. Please read the above quote.

She should not need to take the battery out and putting it back in for it to charge.

I do not plug the laptop into a charger it charges when it is plugged into the wall outlet. Normally I have it plugged in directly into an outlet, last night I had the laptop in a different location and had it plugged in through a surge protected power bar, could that have made a difference?

It should not make a difference Frances.

Did the battery get 100% charged?

    Are you still having problems?

The battery is fully charged, and as I haven't had it unplugged since it is staying at 100% One other thing I did yesterday was to use an external monitor but I don't see why that should have caused any problems.

Frances the external monitor would not have made a difference. Laptop batteries do not last forever they lose capacity over time at about 20% per year.
