Thanks very much for all the info, Steve.

I shall have a look, but, considering I've never used anything like this before, I think I will need basic tutorials.
How to draw (if that's the correct term in these 3D programmes?) simple objects. How to do basic things with them, and so on.

I've see that there is a figure, there already, and you can clothe and dress this figure. But, that's not really learning anything, is it?
Or am I looking at this completely from the wrong point of view?

if you watch the three videos here:

    http://www.daz3d.com/i/products/hexagon?

you get an idea of what hexagon is for - same idea as blender..

Daz studio is specifically oriented to figure work - you can use predefined 'asset' or create your own from a base ['genesis'] - one of its selling points is that you can produce art that 'looks like' a photo-shoot without using live models - also good for comic art and animation

bryce is tailored for background art

Hexagon is one of my favorite modelers, the only thing I don't like about it is the UV pelting system, which can be annoying at times.
Lately I just use Hexagon to create a base mesh and send it into Zbrush.

Bryce is sorta like Vue... I had just purchased World Machine, and the next day I heard about the Freebies, so I'm going to be using Bryce a lot with my World Machine. Interesting to compare Bryce 7 pro to Carraras terrain/instance generator and see which works better.

    Great

Hexagon delivers all the tools that a graphic artist need to create, completed, detailed and textured 3D models.

They are free, download them to see if you like them.

Software in and of itself is not necessarily good or bad. It depends on the skill of the person using an application that determines the outcome. I know people that can create beautiful images using only Microsoft Paint. Willingness to try a new application and invest time in learning it's tools is the most important things regarding software.

ID:	90253I have found that all three apps are great. Hexagon is so easy to use but I must admit I have only made plates, jugs and suchlike so far. In Bryce you can make up landscapes that are so hard to tell what is real and what is CG. Daz 3D brings it all together to create outrageous scenes.
I only downloaded the package last week and I have already started to make up finished pictures but I still have much to learn.
