Animation changing colors

I had read somewhere that you can animate more than just the objects scale, location and rotation. So I tried to change the color of an object during the animation. The result you can see in the cylinder in the front.

It opens perspectives to animate lots of things...

I tried to change reflection, transparency and refraction index. Maybe I shouldn't have done all 3 in one go.

Did you use the AnimAll add-on for the color changing?

No I didn't. I will have to look into it, as I don't know it.
What I did : I animated the motion of the cylinder - on the left in frame 1 with a red material, on the right in frame 61.
Back to frame 1 where I pressed I (set keyframe) with the mouse over the (red) diffuse field. To frame 61 - change color to purple, and press I again with the mouse over the (then purple) diffuse field.
