Can't "Open With" Designer Pro 7

I select a file, then right-click, choose Open With from the menu options, and the Desigen Pro installation window warning comes up, reslting in me being asked if I want to Repair or Remove the prgramme. It's a bit irritating, as I use this method for opening files quite often. Can anyone advise as to what's wrong? I re-installed DP7, bot issue persists.

I am wondering if, somehow, your system has the wrong options set so that, instead of 'opening with', it is actually 'running' which would kick off the installation program - it's worth checking that out

The reason is that the .xar files have been associated with: Xara_Designer_Pro_7_en-GB_setup.exe
instead of with: DesignerPro.exe

I'm sure you can fix this by right clicking on any .xar file and then selecting 'Open with...'
Then click on 'Choose program...'
Select Xara Designer and make sure you put a rick in the box that says 'Always use the selected program to open this type of file.'

Below is how you do this in Windows XP, but Windows 7 is not that different!

Ah, many thanks for the replies. I think the issue is that I was trying to use Open With to open JPEGS, but this appears not to work. Designer Pro 7 is not offered as an option. Maybe that's how it's meant to be?

I noticed when trying to sort this that Designer Pro does not appear on in the list of applications available through Control Panel>Set Default Programs, so it can't be set as a default at all. Obviously, it is the default for DP7 files, but cannot be used to open any others. I suspect I'm being obtuse, but other apps are offered in this list.

you should be able to set designer to open jpgs - at least you can in XP - which windows are you using?

Again, thanks for the responses.

I am using Windows 7 (32 bit).

I looked up the MS page and did what it said. However, when I selected Change, DP7 was not there as an option in the Open With dialogue box to enable me to associate it with JPEGS, so could not do so. The option for JPEGS remains as Windows Photo Viewer. As I say, DP7 is not showing up as an application anywhere except in the Programs menu and the Control Panel>Uninstall Programs menu.

so 'other programs' or 'browse' did not find it?

I can't claim to be an expert on win 7 as I don't personally use it - the only win 7 computer we have does not have any xara software installed - maybe someone else can help further

browse at least should enable you to go to the program folder and the .exe file
