    Default Whote on white, almost

I was just trying here to see how little tone variation a "white on white" composition could have and still be legible.

This might make a CD cover art piece. I added a lot of Alien Skin's Exposure grain effects to it, which I like to de-sterilize rendered models, but here's a Big Time hint for everyone: you put noise in a photo, it increases the saved file size for JPEGs, because the JPEG file format averages tones, and it can't do that effectively if every neighboring tone is different, which is what noise does.

Default Retro pitcher and globe mug

Playing with selective color and just a general "roundness" as part of the visual theme:

This took more work than one might imagine.

    The fonts were important.

    ;)

I drew the board (at least the part I knew was going to be visible) entirely in Xara Designer, then exported it as a bitmap.

Funny what something as simple as bump-mapping some rough paint strokes does to an otherwise sterile composition, eh?

    Thanks, handrawn.

but you have to know what to do with them

I really do like this composition.. normally I don't go for the 'lets try and make it realistic' stuff, but this one is an exception...

Well, thanks again. I confess, though, that the composition was ad hoc: I modeled the homes and the hotel for a tutorial (unrelated to Xara), and afterwards, the incompleteness of the little playing pieces without a background bothered me enough to try an unusual camera angle, and lighting you'd never actually play a game with!

Here's as far as I needed to get with the board in Xara:

The art is SO kitsch! I hate playing the game, but love the design work, from 1933 I believe.

Which gives you some idea of how old Copperplate and Kabel are.

    exactly - and that's what I like....

assuming Darrow did it all [and that's an assumption].. 1933 would be about right

A quick trip to Wikipedia says that Charles Darrow is erroneously credited as the sole creator of the game as we know it now, and as Parker Brothers originally sold it. There were at least two other people involved, and dunno on who did the artwork.

However, the iconic character—Rich Uncle Pennybags—has absolutely no credited artist, ever. Lost to history, although speculation was that it was a caricature of J.P. Morgan, the industrialist who merged two companies into what's now General Electric.
