I'm sure it's something obvious, but I've checked the documentation, and cannot figure out how to get the Mask Icon on after selecting a .jpeg image. Tried doing "Window>Show Mask" as well, but "Show Mask is greyed out.

Ha - got it! Doesn't work in an animation...always good to provide the context of the issue!
I'm glad you found it. I had no idea, so couldn't help. Thanks for sharing your solution.
Things you should never say when pulled over by the police:
Could you hold my beer while I dig out my license?
This one had me perplexed too, it never occurred to me that you might be trying to use the mask within an animation. This is a good example of why it is important to give as much info as possible when asking questions
Some good info to include when asking for help:
A brief description of what you are trying to accomplish with an image or a screenshot if possible
Software version - Xara produces several versions that have various features.
If possible a .xar or .web file can be very helpful.
