Have a play around first. My advise would be to just relax and have some fun learning what Xara animation can do, or not do. Ie don't get too hung up on what you want the end result to be just yet, it will come to you once you've practised a little.
Any specifics you are stuck once you have had a go, just ask.

what about using the slide show eyecatcher widget or make a flash file?

You can create this using WD6 goto File>> New>> AnimationI'm looking for something I can do in WD6. From what I understand, I would have to purchase Xara Xtreme?
you will then have all the tools you need to create your animation.
