    Default Magic Wand Issue

    Hi Folks,

I have a problem with getting the magice want to work properly on the trial version of XDP7.1.1

I get the error that's shown in the graphic. This seems to happen with any picture I bring into Xara.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks for any help......

It's something I had not played with, yet.
But having just tried it, I get no errors.

Might be worth posting what you are trying to do this on, if you can, that is.
    Then we can try it!

I thought it might be something to do with the size (Mb) of the photo but I've just tried it with a 6Mb photo and I get no errors.

    Magic Wand?
Yes -- I see from your screenshot you mean the 'Magic erase'.

    Standard suggestions apply here
    *Re boot
    *Re install with AV disabled
*Run as Admin on first launch

    See if that helps?

    Hi Folks,

Tried all the above with no luck. Are there system requirements for this version of XDP? Perhaps because my system is a bit older, maybe that's the problem?

Oh, and yes, magic erase from the clone tool....my bad.....also, my normal ID is the Admin....so basically just a reboot and disable AV.....first time I've ever had a problem running anything in Xara....6 is flawless.....

Thanks again for such quick responses.......

'Run as admin' isn't the same as having an admin account K --

System requirements same for older versions.
Though a new shiny PC with biggest screen you can afford will make many hours playing with Designer Pro 7 even more enjoyable.

Maybe you can contact xara support and lodge a ticket if the above didn't help.

What CPU does your computer have? This is shown in the Properties dialog for "My Computer" and, in more detail, in the winmsd tool (Start/Run... and type winmsd, look for the Processor line). It is possible that the magic erase code uses some instructions that aren't present on some older CPUs.

    Hi Folks,

CPU is an AMD+1800 which translates to a 1.5 Ghz speed....I don't really think that's the problem as XDP6 works just fine with it and had no trouble at all installing it same way as this version.

    Thanks,

    Ed,

It does look like the issue is with the processor (which was after all was initially released nearly a decade ago). The magic erase code makes use of certain instructions that weren't implemented on AMD chips until the Athlon64 line of processors. Other aspects of the program run properly since they don't use those instructions.

    Hi Folks,

Thanks very much for the info Luke. I guess it's time to upgrade the PC to something current.

Where can a person find the requirements for the various versions of Xara software?

Thanks for all your replies folks,

Luke, my system uses an Athlon 64 6000+ (3Ghz) processor and Magic erase works flawlessly.
