Button Color change and fix length of stretchy button

Is there a simple way to change the color of the stretchy button, Gloss Stretch, in the button templates? When I drag red to the button I get a solid red button with no text and lose all of the hightlighting.

Secondly is there a way to change the stretchy button to a fixed length, I like the Gloss Stretch, but will be using it in a menu bar so want all buttons to be the same length?

I figured out how to change the colors; select color editor, select theme color form drop down, select color.

Any input on making the stretchy button a fixed length, I want to keep the style?

Ungroup the button and text, change the size, then regroup the text and button.
