    Luciano, thanks, and interestingly, the transparent rectangle seems to brighten the colors, or at least on the monitor display of the PDF/X, it does. See attached image "Sunrays-Luciano-transp-effect.png."

    I expanded your transparency outline but didn't take it to the edge of the design, and there is a definite difference in the color. (see attached image wherein arrows indicate the boundaries of my transparent rectangle, "Sunrays-Outline.png"). Makes me wonder if a transparent rectangle can be used to brighten the entire image, and also if it will work for all the card deck images I'm creating regardless of design elements. Interesting.

    Perhaps it's just a vagary of graphic software, or my own lack of understanding how layers work, but I must admit it seems strange to me that it removes the "halo" effect by being placed under the ellipse and shape.
