Default PNG import file size (Designer Pro 6)

Print job requiring quality images with a transparent background at 300dpi. I decided PNG would be best.

When importing PNG's into Designer Pro 6 I noticed that they gain a few pounds (i.e. a 1.75MB file on the hard drive becomes 3.5MB in Designer).

For smaller images I ignore this, but now I need to use a rather large pic with transparent background. In this case, a 5.55MB piccy becomes a whopping 17MB in Designer (optimizing gives me a 17MB optimized image).

Is this normal? Does anyone have any thoughts, advice, insults?

Suck it up dummy, is also good!

The size you see in the Bitmap Gallery is uncompressed size of the bitmap.
