Default What .bmp format does Xara export to?

I'm needing a few files to be saved in 4-bit indexed .bmp for a project and my version of PS CS3 does not appear to support saving as 4-bit. I can export 16 color with Xara Xtreme 4 but how can I verify that it is in indexed format? I apologize if this seems to be a rather basic question however I am new to this particular format.

    Hi

if when you export your .bmp you select color depth 256 it will open in photoshop as an indexed file - EDIT - see next post

sorry - you said 4 bit - that's 16 colors [256 colors is 8 bit] - yes it opens in my [older ps] as indexed file

Thanks for the quick reply. I exported a file as 4-bit from Xara and opened in PS. Lo and behold it was reading as indexed color (although showing it as 8-bit in the info window) where as the original version was in RGB mode. For whatever reason versions of PS after CS2 struggle with 4-bit color pallettes and being able to do this from Xara saves me a lot of hassle. Thanks again.

it may well open in later photoshop at 8 bit depth if that is the minimum the program can deal with - my older version has the 4 bit option

sorry about the slight confusion on my part to begin with
