index_htm_files: Permission denied

I get this problem when uploading a revised version of my website. Any idea? I dont know what it means. Its www.bloomsburycleaning.co.uk

sounds like the account you use to connect to your server does not have the necessary permissions to create a new folder or it has sucessfully created the folder but its permissions are set in a manner which prevents the account you use from writing to the particular folder.

Id recommend connecting to your server via a free ftp tool such as filezilla or winscp and browsing the directory you are uploading your web pages to. within this folder, does the folder named index_htm_files exist? If yes, can you browse this folder and attempt to upload a file to this folder? If you cannot then it confirms its a permission problem with your ftp account in which case i recommend contacting your hosts

Firstly the reason I havent touched the website in ages is because of problems like this with web designer. It says 'web design for the rest of us' but everytime I've tried to upload stuff I have had problems and had to spend hours trying to figure it out in Filezilla. Other WSYWIG programs I have experience of never have this problem, and I've been using the same ISP. You just click upload changes and it does it. Xara need to sort this out as I am sure there are plenty of people using it like me who dont know what index_htm files and stuff means.

I need to upload just the changes. I have the file open in Filezilla on the left side, and my new website saved on the right. But I dont know what all this hhtpdocs and stuff is on the right side. I dont know where to put the files to, I dont know anything. I dont know where index_htm would be. Arrrgh.

Hi its not really a Xara problem. All the program is attempting to do when uploading is create a folder where the graphic files are referenced from.

Thinking about this some more, another possible cause of the problem is you have not set the sub folder path correctly within the publish settings from the web properties dialog.

Id recommend submitting a support ticket providing your ftp details and it would take only a few minutes to check and advise accordingly.

What is a ticket id?

As a test I tried making a small change to the website on a page that isnt used much. I dragged the file useful_links.htm over to the same file in the httpdocs folder. Now its messed up the page

I am using a new pc from the one I originally uploaded the website from. Could this be the problem?

Hi Stuart,

This has nothing to do with what PC you are uploading from unless your FTP home directory settings are different between the two installations of Xara you have used. This is my advice : download Filezilla from here and http://filezilla-project.org/download.php delete everything in the web root (usually httpdocs/public_html directory). Then upload your website again.

I don't use the Xara FTP client. I use either DW or Filezilla to upload my site. That way I have complete control over what I upload.

PS. your links page looks fine to me in FF 3.6

Thanks, I've been considering that over the past few hours. I had an SEO guy have a crack at it once and maybe its stuff hes changed in there.

The thing is I just got the useful_links.htm file from the new website and dragged it over to replace the same file on the uploaded website in filezilla. One thing I noticed was that the new .htm file was a bit smaller than the original file (which I dont think it should be as it contained more content) It messed the page up. The reason you saw it being ok is that I went and found the original file on my pc and dragged it over to replace that one and now the page displays fine.

So this leads me to believe that the .htm file depends on other folders in the website root directory, and you cannot just replace it individually like that? All the other folders and stuff in the uploaded site must be updated too? Therefore deleting the whole site and reuploading should rectify this? Which folder do I delete from the website? Sorry to sound thick about all this stuff.

Would deleting the site and reuploading affect google rankings??

No, if anything Google will note that the site's had an update and uprank it accordingly.

As for your FTP, your web root folder is httpdocs. If you want to delete your site, delete all the files inside httpdocs (you'll see the files in the preview pane under the /httpdocs folder view) and the folder index_htm_files. Do not delete plesk-stat as this is this folder that contains your server logfiles. The rest of the folders you can safely delete if you're starting from scratch.

ok I deleted all the .htm files, and deleted the index_htm_files. I didn't delete any of the others as I was too chicken. I replaced these with the new files.

Now the whole sites gone down.
