Default How do you make nav bars from scratch? Desperate plee

This is a desperate plea, where can I find info on how to make my own nav bars?

I read the help file, the book, every thing!!!

No mater what I do I cannot get the mouse over to work properly, You have to group the lot together and then all the elements take on the current layer.

    HEEEEELLLPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Soft Group, not Group. These are different things.

Attached as a simple demo to show my issue

The text on both layers are soft grouped, it all works well in preview

Now I select both layers and try to make a set of nav buttons using the "create Navigation bar" option but all I get is an error

Unless I do a group I cannot use "Create Navigation bar", As soon as I do I lose my layers

You should read carefully what the warning window says.
Every state of your menu button must be a group that contains text and button object. On the same layer. You can not make a button form just a text.
Now, as you have a group of text and graphics that represents your button on the mouseoff layer, you create a similar group on the mouseover layer. Then you soft group these two groups. Now you can make a navbar of it.
See attached file. It's your web design. I just grouped objects correctly so now you can create a navbar without a problem.

Ok Now I get it, so you do not have to softgroup the "text" element, layers to make the associate.

This is what I should do

Group (Text + Graphics on MouseOn)
Group (Text + Graphics on MouseOff )

    Softgroup both.

    Many thanks...
