Default Importing .ico images for WD6

    Hello,

Does anyone know how to use .ico files in WD6? I am attempting to use a set of icons from dryicons.com which come as .ico files. When I import them into WD6, all that gets imported is what appears to be only 1 layer of the icon.

You can see what I mean by looking at the attachments below.

    Appreciate any help on this!

    Thanks.

    Mark

PS The bottom photo is what the .ico is supposed to look like. The top image is what actually imports into WD6.

There is a free utility, IcoFX http://icofx.ro/ that could probably convert these files into a format supported by Xara. PNG or GIF would probably be the best formats.

Thanks a lot Gary. That app worked for me. I think I figured out why it may not have been working in WD6 in the first place. Turns out the icon, when you hover over it, actually moves (the folded down corner flips up). My guess is that there is more to this file since it is not static. The icoFX tool doesn't translate that movement in the icon.

Thanks for all of your help.

PS...Just for future reference, WD6 doesn't support .ico files, correct?

That is correct WD6 does not support importing .ico files.

The whole thing is, WHY NOT?! Xara D does everything, why not just make it support the format so we don't need any other program to convert anything. I totally love icons, and totally love Xara. But I would rather love them together!
Yes, yes, and what if the core is made of CHEESE?

Icons and the .ico format are not necessarily the same thing.
As Gary mentioned, IcoFX is free and is an outstandingly good utility for creating .ico files.
Use in conjunction with Xara software is dead simple. Have both apps open, design your icon graphic in Xara, copy it to the clipboard, paste it into IcoFX and save your file as .ico. You can even create a multi-size .ico file if you need it.
This workflow is dead simple and very useful when creating favicons for websites. I use it quite often.

You can also look for Microsoft Icons in the list rather than simply the word icon.

Yes that's also in the WD import dialog too Bill. Never has worked for me.
When I said Icons and the .ico format are not necessarily the same thing, I was being literal. Icons as small graphics can be saved as any format.

Yes, I agree. Many Icon packs available on the internet are not .ico files.

Icons can be physical objects as well.
