Question Is there a way to recover corrupt files?

    Hi All,

I think the title is pretty self explanatory. I was saving a file when my system crashed. When I went to open it - yup... the file is corrupt. I don't have the back-up app installed yet but I was wondering if there was an app or process that could salvage a corrupt .xar file?

    Thanks

    G

The answer is it may be possible.

It really depends on the file.

If you can post the file as an attachment we can examine it to see if anything is retrievable or not.

There is a command line (DOS type application) program that can be used to try and retrieve corrupt files. If you are comfortable using command line programs you can download ExpandXar.exe from http://www.xaraxone.com/html/shareware.html scroll down to the "All is not lost!!!" paragraph.

There will most likely be some loss of data but the file as repaired by ExpandXar.exe is attached.

When you open the file it may report a couple of errors, simply click the OK button to continue and what data was retrieved will be loaded into Xtreme.

You can save to a new file so the errors will not occur again.

Wow, Xtreme really overwrites files *in place* when you save? That's pretty evil.

Applications working with important / big files should always write a *copy* of the file, and when that is written, rename the copy to the original name.

Why not use XaReg to enable Xara's *.bak feature Alex
