Yes, I understand how to do it that way Allison, but it's a tedious process for eight or more rings. I have a feeling that someone here knows how to do it without all the repetition.

If you consider my original quest for the segmented circles - that turns out to be so much simpler (at the moment) than just getting the circles without segments. I have little doubt that one of the Xtreme Gurus will have a simple answer.

The truth is that to me some aspects of Xtreme's behaviour seem quite bizarre. The initial stages of converting lines to shapes in the segment creation process leaves us with white shapes and black lines and eventually we end up with black shapes and a surplus black circle with spokes.

Now I don't really follow exactly what Xtreme does when converting lines to shapes or maipulating multiple shapes in groups that causes the clever behaviour. I guess I need to check out the documentation, but I'm sure I'm not alone in finding it a difficullt thing to follow.

Do gurus get to be gurus by understanding or tinkering? Whatever the answer I really do appreciate the help I've had.

Paul, I think we have it as simple as it could be.

#1 Create your smallest circle with line size to provide enough spacing
#2 Contour the circle outward with the desired number of steps
#3 Create star with 0 stellation and line size for spacing
#4 Center the star on the circle and group the two
#5 Convert group to editable shapes
    #6 Convert line to shape
    #7 Break shapes
#8 Remove excess (Circle with spokes) to show desired segmented circle

To get rounding, you simply add a 2 pix line to the segments and change the line to a round join.

Are you doing it some other way? Or is it that this is too much to get the desired result?

Thanks Bobby - your original directions were fine - the latest quest is coencentric rings WITHOUT the segments!

My last post was saying that I can make the segments (a more complex set of shapes) than I can coencentric rings. I also think Xtreme is driven by vodoo. ;-)

Wouldn't that just be making the circle followed by contour and ungroup? Or is there more to what you need?

That gives me a set of circles, not rings. I want all those segmented circles, but without the seperated circles!

I wouldn't even be talking about this, but the segmented circles procedure was so neat, you'd think the unsegmented version would be even simpler.

This isn't some huge problem for me, so only do it if you think it's a challenge.

Thanks to everyone for the great assistance and a very interesting thread.

Is this what you mean? You can make the rings larger by changing the line size on the 1st circle.

Not 100% with you here Paul, is this what you want?

    * Create circle with no fill and set line to, say, 20pix
    * Clone and reduce this by double the line width i.e. 40pix
    * Repeat point two as many times as you want
    * Select all & convert lines to shapes and all to editable shapes

I don't think this is really worth any more energy chaps. I just wanted the contoured circles to be a band without a centre, not circles on top of each other - think olympic rings.

The easiest way I know to do it is to use a circle and turn off the main colour and set the line width appropriately, then convert the line to a shape. Rinse and repeat.

As I say, probably not worth wasting energy over.
