Icons

I did not have a very good understanding of exactly what an icon was when I created a few. I understand better now. An icon is a small image that clearly represents and idea or object. My icons do not do that so I guess they aren't really icons. I like them anyway. I was thinking of cards (which I love to play....any card game)...queen, king, etc. If you like cards or chess, maybe you'll like them too.

If this is your 1st effort at icons, then may I say what a fantastic start.

Any representation of an object, link, page is an icon. As you may not at the moment have an idea for their use, others may, hence the plethora of icons out on the web.

I wish Microsoft, Adobe, and a plethora of other software vendors would get their collective heads around that (the operative word being "clearly").

One of my major pet-peeves is a so-called "icon" that has to be labeled or have a tool-tip in order to be understood. If that's necessary, the icon is NOT necessary, and is nothing more than gratuitious, "me, too" eye-candy in a supposedly "intuitive" software. Adobe Illustrator is among the worst offenders.

Rant over.

From a chess perspective:
Your king and queen are pretty intuitive.
The knight is not. One has to study it to recognize the horse. It's over-abstracted, so the style is getting in the way of recognition.
If that's a bishop in the lower right (suggested by the sceptor), it looks more like a jester because of the hat. A deck of cards has a Joker, but chess does not.

JET, I didn't start them as chess pieces or cards, just a king, queen, jester and knight's mount. Once I made them I realized that they didn't 'clearly' represent anything...hence my problem. You are correct about the horse being a bit too abstract. I was trying to keep the circular look of the set and over simplified it. If these were useful for anything I would take the advise and rework the horse and perhaps make a real bishop too...would be interesting.

Nancy I use this kind of ICON as interest to themed place cards as a matter of interest I am in the process of doing some Xmas ones now.
I think yours are great.
