No luck so far with Xara.com, so let me try here:

I've been running XaraX1 happily from the paid-for download until I got my disk last week. I then uninstalled both XaraX and XaraX1, each in a different folder on Drive G: of this Win2K sp3 system. I then attempted to install the app from the disk. The following flag appeared: "Unable to determine previous location of Xara ... terminate" I then put vanilla XaraX back where it was. No joy. Nor will the download file open and install. So I have XaraX, but not the new app. Instructions, please.

I sent the above to the Xara support address, but got no response. Perhaps one of you has a solution?

The Xara X1 CD installer is looking for the location of XX1 download version on your disk. You will have to reinstall XX1 downloaded version first, then install from the CD.
You may have to re-download XX1 if you current download copy doesn't work. Goodluck http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

No that's not right.

O, did you look in the registry and the Program Files folder to make sure that both areas are cleared of any old Xara X stuff?? Makes no sense that the disk would exit like that instead of just installing over any of the older 'info' that's left behind.

If it persists then hopefully Charles or someone will pop in and have a proper fix for you. That's about all I can think of at the moment to offer.

If you don't know how to access the registry then do this (at your own risk, blah blah blah... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif ) Start/Run/ type in regedit and follow the path, the denotes a new folder to go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareXara XaraX1

If the Xara X1 or XaraX folders are still there after the uninstalls then right click on it and choose "delete", you will be asked for permission to do so, select Yes and exit the registry.

You should be able to just install from the CD without removing the download first, it will just install the CD to wherever the download is currently installed.

Sounds like something interfered with the uninstallation process. I highly recommend disabling applications such as Anti-Virus packages and installation monitors as they can cause havoc with installation/de-installations.

Both the download and CD versions are designed to over-install previous installations if they are still referenced in the registry, so Richard was on the right lines for a potential "quick fix", however the area that you need to remove (if Xara X1 is not currently installed) is:-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Xara\Xara X1

Again as Richard said, be very careful when using regedit as it can cause severe damage to your system if misused.

I rely on "Registry First Aid", which does a wonderful job of cleaning the registry. "Total Uninstall", on the other hand, monitors installs and removes every change made by the install procedure if you ask it to. But you got to get them working in synch. Duh. Richard was quite right: a manual delete of the Xara folder in Local Machine>Software>Xara did the trick. Much obliged.

Glad to be of service O!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I have had to do this many times in the past with other stuborn installations and uninstalls alike. I just do it automatically these days. If a program leaves it's paper trail behind, well, it's my system, so I better make sure it's as clean as possible!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
