    Default This mornings full moon.

About a year ago several members were posting images of the full moon.

I'm a bit late, but this is a shot of the full moon as seen when I arrived home from work this morning.

Nice photo Bill, and such a variety of colors in the image.

Thanks Larry and John. The colours are interesting, the sun was just below the eastern horizon. To my eyes the moon was more silver coloured but the camera picked up the more red tint.

The attached image is the eastern horizon opposite the moon image.

This is the sunrise just a few minutes after the shot in the previous post.

Have you used automatic white balance setting?

    Hi John,

Yes the shots were made using my new camera. Auto white balance was used for the moon shot. Although I also reduced the aperature two full f-stops more than the camera suggested settings. Using the camera's suggested settings the moon was simply a white circle.

    hi Bill... Nice moon shot.

Use daylight for the WB setting. If you can set your camera to spot metering you can get a much cloer reading then the default average. My moon shots are anywhere from 1/25 to 1/250 depending on the cloud cover.

If you have a "raw" setting use that and then play around in post to get the right temperture setting.

here are a few of my moon shots, so you can see what exposures I used.

    Rayner's Moon shots

The lens is a 1000mm Cheapo POS (but it works for moon shots) F16 fixed aperture. When I am rich and famous I will get a 1300mm F1.2.

    Thanks John.

Unfortunately the camera I bought doesn't have a raw setting. It does have spot metering as well as two other meter settings. I just need to remember how to get to them.

Problems with these new cameras is they have thousands of settings and my old brain takes time to learn how to access the one I want at the time I need it.

It was much easier with a simple focus ring, aperature ring,
ASA setting for film speed, and shutter speed selecter, and shutter button.

The camera had an averaging meter, and I carried a spot meter in my pocket.

Back about 35 to 40 years ago things were simpler. Kodachrome, Ectachrome, Tri-X, Pan-X, Plus-X, and 100 ASA colour print film in 35mm, and 120 and 220 for medium format cameras. It was more difficult to carry around 5x7 and 8x10 sheets for large format cameras, but I rarely carried those out and about in any case.

It was a bit of a bother carrying around several cameras with different speed and type of film loaded, but back then I was younger and stronger.

I'm in the same boat with Bill...I have trouble remembering how to use the settings even though I've read my manual at least 3 times all the way through. Auto is so convenient when you are taking quit shots, lol.

Rayner, the moons on your site are AMAZING!!!!!! Makes me want to try capturing it with your suggestions.
