Wouldn't it be nice to specify your own string of text in the fonts gallery. It would make finding fonts for something so much easier.

    This was already suggested,
this feature will be very useful for
international users who have different charsets.
Charles, please, let Xara gets sample
string from registry key, it is only few
    lines of code.

    I agree.

Perhaps an option in the Font Gallery to display a string of selected text. It would help me a great deal in identifying fonts used in a downloaded web image.

Funny, I just posted something about this very thing to Egg in the Gallery.

I've mentioned this before, but in case anyone missed it, if you own a copy of Xara3D, this is a great work-round for font duplication. You can type in the desired text & just use the up/down arrow keys to scroll thru your installed fonts. I mentioned it in one of the 'wish-for lists', ans as Xara already has the code, I can't see it would be a great hardship to port the text window, as an option, into XaraX.

Of course the problem is that the preview is just a bitmap; there's no method of generating the bitmaps on the fly - which also means Xara can't arbitrarily add fonts to the gallery (cf. quietism's post).

I'm considering hacking up an app using FreeType to generate the bitmaps, which would allow an arbitrary string to be used... I suspect Xara's gallery wouldn't pick up the change immediately though.

Font Thing is top; it's just a pity it only supports TTF.

Typograf is another; supports OTF OK, but isn't as free and I like the interface much less.
