Clive. You did not really ask this question. It's just my imagination, right.
In the drop down menus there is a shortcut listed for most commands.
Let you cursor rest over any of the tools and a tool tip appears with the shortcut key.
And if these don't register, there is a handy laminated card that comes with the shipping version that lists all the keyboard shortcuts.
But wait, there's more. Go to HELP and search for Keyboard Shortcuts.
Need more?

I’ll rephrase my question what I wanted to know was you click to start a line is there a short cut key to start with a curve I’ve tried pressing C and clicking, clicking and dragging like in photoshop

The shape editor tool is intuitively 'mouse interactive'.

Tip: Xara Xtreme is not a PhotoShop clone
For people that are users of AI Xara has made a Pen Tool but with no finger hopping between the Alt and Shift keys. All that you have to do is to left click for a line and left click and drag for a curve. Having said that most people in the forum here do not use this tool, all users use the Shape Editor Tool and just push & pull the lines around. This means in a Xara there is no need for a Direct Selection Tool it is all done by the Shape Edit Tool to edit both lines and anchor points as well as having the ability to draw a line and to position the anchor points which makes for very quick and accurate drawings.
Design is thinking made visual.
OK thanks I’ll do my finger hoping in Photoshop CS3 (Shift, Alt and Ctrl)
I’ll just have to import and export PSD file until I get more familiar with XX5 only had the program since 09/09/09
