Default PDF turns all bitmaps into JPG?

Friends, does PDF turns all bitmaps into JPG?
Even if the JPG quality is set to 100% still it losses image quality?

I was going to answer your question with a loud yes but I thought I better have a look at a few files first. As far as I can see the answer is still yes although if you set a file type before you export it will export as a gif. or something else depending as what it is imported as or converted as. Now I have only checked two files that I could remember as converting as a gif. before exporting and both stayed with gif. Just to be sure had a very quick look at the Help files and they confirmed my export:
    "PDF 1.4.
Fonts are embedded, and subsetted (meaning only those characters used are embedded as fonts).
All bitmaps and photos are passed through untouched, unless they are more than 300 dpi in which case they are sampled down to be 300 dpi but retain their existing type (they are not all converted to JPG)."
    Design is thinking made visual.

Why not just set bitmap compression to 'none' ?
