Can't Get Started with This

The attached graphic was used extensively in an August issue of Entertainment Weekly. I have tried to duplicate the basic forms in Xara but can't get it right. I believe that I may nor really understand the shape tool. Could someone point me to a helpful tutorial on lesson in the XaraZone or just somw hints?

Apart from the Fonts the shape is very simple. really no more than 3 shapes. Here's a quick video of how I'd do it. Run out of time in the end but I'll attach the xar so you can see I completed it.
