How do i make an image/photo look black and white?

HI guys,
i feel like a bit of an idiot but how do i make an image look 'black and white', as they say. im a competent xara user but this has me stumped. ive tried to just apply a different colour to the whole photo but it jus completely flat fills it in that colour. Help appreciated.

You could de-saturate the photo using the photo tool [p]

Select your image and left click on the colour bar on white.

1) Click on the Photo tool.

3) Set the saturation level to -100.

P.S. You might want to de-saturate the photo before you import it into Xara, as this might give you better results. Take a look at GIMP. This free bitmap editing software is great and allows you to choose a shade of grey based on lightness, luminosity or average. Go to Color > Desaturate and select one of the three settings.
