I know this is going to seem silly to all of you amazing graphic artists but I recently purchases Xara Xtreme and I can not seem to figure out how to fill a shape with simple cross-hatching or plain old patterns. I went through the Help Menu and everything. I am technologically challenged by the way. Anyone have a tip for the beginner?

Re: Beginner Xara Xtreme has a very basic question.
Sure...
Draw your shape and with it still selected
Open the Fill Gallery
Open the folder called 'Two Color Shading'
Select the pattern that you want to fill your shape with
Click the 'Fill' button in the Fill Gallery
Close the fill gallery
(optional steps here)
Click on the fill tool
Use the fill handles to adjust the fill of your object.
You can also apply colors to the middle and end fill handles

Welcome mvreed, no such thing as a silly question here. If you are using the download version all the available fills are not in the fills folder and you'll need to wait for the CD to arrive. These type of fills will be available in the 2 colour fill section.
Apart from that you can always make your own fills.

Any bitmap imported (or created) into your document can by used as a fill.
Select your shape then go to the Bitmap Gallery, select the image and press the 'Fill' button.

If I understand you correctly the answer is yes.
Select the object or text you want to fill and go to fill/bitmap. If you make your own graphic on the spot you will need to make a bitmap copy of your graphic to have it available as a fill(Arrange/Create Bitmap Copy).

Never give up. You will never fail, but you may find a lot of ways that don't work.
