When I I bring down the menu items, the keyboard shrtcuts have strange characters in it. Is the font an unusual one or what?
I have attached a screen capture to illustrate.

I was getting the same square characters when trying to use some Alt codes in WD6. I get either a square or a smiley face depending on the font (see first bullet). Font is Georgia, Alt 1 through 9. Most of my fonts produce the same result. Windows7 64bit.

Jim the proper use of Alt codes for characters requires using 4 digits. There are some fonts that support the older DOS character set using Alt and the digits 0 through 9 but not all Windows fonts support them.
In the attached image the proper alt code is shown in the lower right corner of the image. That is your right. All instructions for where something is located in an image are as seen by the viewer.

I am not trying to use different fonts.
These appear in the drop down menus, and refer to the keyboard shortcuts. they should be Ok. I don't have any probelems with other programs. I am using Windows XP.
Looks like some your system fonts are changed?
Are you using a third party XP theme ?
You could also try re installing WD to make sure the Xara fonts are registered correctly.
Also possibly your Windows font folder may need repairing. You can do this with MS TweakUI Powertoy.
I have reinstalled WD, but to no avail.
Because my previous computer failed, I have just installed Windows XP Service pack 3 on to a new machine. I started with WD5 and it was fine. I upgraded to WD6 and this problem appeared. I am not using any third party theme.
I actually seldom use the keyboard shortcuts, but it is irritating to see these characters.
Someone suggested Georgia was used. I have that installed on my machine and it is listed in the Web Safe fonts.
I didn't see where the font folder thing is with TweakUI
The keyboard shortcut descriptions that you see on the menus and in other places are usually created by Windows and they are localised using the current input locale.
So, for instance, the "Ctrl+Backspace" shortcut might be translated to "Ctrl+Retroceso" in Spanish (stab in the dark).
So, what is your input locale and do your system fonts support the characters used by that locale?
Phil
As far as I can see my Windows system is set for UK English.
If it wasn't, wouldn't I have this problem for all programs?
Using the TweakIU didn't seem to do anything, and the problem is still there.
Incidentally I have the same problem with my copy of Extreme4.
