Many laptops don't have a number pad like on regular computer keyboards, so there's a function key that lets you use some of the letter or number keys as a number pad.

Sometimes, the key is labeled Num Lock and on others it's Fn.

It's kind of hard for me to explain - Here's a link that might explain it better.

My laptop has a separate number pad. It does have a fn key and to be certain I tried to assign CTRL1 to "add shapes" and toggled the fn key but still no change.
