I can't figure out how to export selected object

Yes, that's what I was (badly) trying to explain. If you export it as a PNG with Transparency (Alpha channel) you will only export the yellow box. I think if you want the other two shapes to also be part of the exported PNG, then you would have to select them too.

I was homed in on .jpg - which doesn't do transparency of course - thiough I am prepared to be proved wrong on that too
