Interesting bevel-on-text effect ...

I think I found the explanation.
When you join two shapes the front shape makes a hole in the shape behind and fill it with the fill of the front shape.
When you convert the beveled shape to editable shapes and ungroup the bebel now is a repeated bitmap.
When you join this bitmap with the shape, the shape is fill it with this repeated bitmap that's the reason why it appears repeated over the shape.

Ah, I see! Nicely worked out And you've jogged my memory! A year or so back I posted about an effect which is, I see now, the same effect.

I made an ellipse, put a flat bevel onto it and converted to editable shapes, which produced this eight sided shape. Decorative potential at least

I used your method then made a bitmap copy and put the missing piece back in.

PROBLEM! To make those crystals I was using an ellipse from the old .xar. Trying to reproduce it I noticed the ellipse was actually a rectangle shape with a single-tile fill, but I can't remember or work out how I made it! DOH!

Making a rectangle with the fill and converting makes it a photo-bitmap, not a shape Can you have a look and see if you can work out what I'm stupidly missing?

Let me see If it is what you want to achieve.

Steps:

Make a shape
Apply a bevel
Fill the shape with the bitmap you send and choose repeating tile.
Adjust bevel's contrast, size and light elevation
That's all
