The thing I really like about the method Frances has used is the irregularity of the pattern, there is even a hint of knottiness. Font: Jungle Caps.

Using real wood bitmaps as fills can make it easy to produce realistic woody graphics...
Poor Frances. She thought she came up with a great tutorial (she did) but everybody has another way of doing wood type.
And don't forget about using a blend to get a realistic 3D look.
