I am considering purchasing Menu Builder, the test menu I made works ok, but there is an extra submenu "@xara " on each button. Can I get rid of this with the registered version?

Yes, when you purchase the full version the copyright and link back to Xara will be removed. It can be done in other ways but to avoid being sued by Xara, I would just purchase the full version.
