Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read. Groucho Marx.
Nice one, Bob.
Here's my take on the Shadow Lined & Hatched Text Mini-Tutorial using a different method. Either way it's a cool effect.
Thanks for sharing,

That's looking good Frances.
Though, I think Bob was going for an old engraving effect or the effect you'd see in old newspapers and magazines. Back then, when they only printed using one color, it saved ink and provided a striking effect.
I've almost got my modified version of Bob's Mini-Tutorial done. It'll show the alternate method I used to create the same effect.
'Til then,

Well, here goes...
This is a modification of Bob's nicely done Shadow Lined & Hatched Text Mini-Tutorial to show how I created the same effect using the Blend and ClipView tools in Xara Xtreme. See my Candy Stripe graphic a couple of posts back for reference.
I hope it's useful to someone,

What's "Scamble"?
Keith

There are 10 types of people in this world .... Those who understand binary, and those who don't.
This is Scamble - a relative's dog - name is a shortened version of an entry, 'Scamblesby' in "The Meaning of Liff". I love the expression on his face
I often use his images[s] for plug-in and effects testing, and his name for font testing.

This technique is not just for producing hatched text. The only limit is your imagination. Here's the same line blending technique expanded on and used to produce some playing cards.
I blended two lines set at a 20° angle, cloned the resulting blend and flipped the clone horizontally before applying my card shape as a ClipView object. The result was the back of three cards in a matter of minutes. I got a little carried away and added a few other objects to make it a bit more realistic.
Many thanks to Soquili for sharing his method for producing Glass Stains. It came in mighty handy as you can see in the second graphic.
I'm all in,
HayTay
