    OK, I think we're getting close, but I also think I know why we aren't getting there. We're all trying too hard. Look at these chrome badges. The one striking thing about them is that the reflections on them are realistic yet simple. The image I did, and the one followed by John, have reflections on them that are way too busy. Maybe my next one will be better.

    Here's my next one. I've chosen not to use a bitmap and to use a vector fade instead. I'm not convinced it's any better though.

    Back to the drawing board.

    I have opted for the linear fill route again, this time with more contrast.
    My closest effort, not that that is saying very much.

    Frank, I think your last attempt is on th right direction. I think you only need more contrast. Notice that every chrome object has at least a couple of small 100% white areas. Black is also welcome. Your latest fill looks good but because of lack of contrast it's more like ceramic instead of chrome. Perhaps this can help.
