Publish settings for each site

Hi

Is it possible (or maybe future feature) to save publishing settings (ftp, username, etc) with each .web file?

It's annoying that each site I create has the same publishing settings (the settings I last used). It seems to be a global setting.

Hi Selbi,

That question has been brought up several times lately.

Xara is evaluating the options. They want to make the most secure option available in a future update.

This issue should not be considered an enhancement for a future issue. It is a serious design flaw which needs to be addressed as a matter of priority.

Rick, it's not a design flaw and I'm sure it could very easily be implemented. The problem is one of security. If the ftp settings were simply saved with the web file there's a possibility you could forget/be unaware of this fact and post your web file to the forum (for example) for assistance. Everyone downloading your web file would now have the user name and password for your server. Not a recommended feature. Xara are working on it from what John has said and hopefuly it will be implemented asap but with security features.

Thanks Egg. I understand your point. However I am not saying it must be part of the web file, that is a technical design issue. What I am saying is that each web file must be related to a dedicated set of FTP data.

This is really so fundamental, one can only consider it to be an oversight (or shortcut) that it was not done that way from the beginning. Every other web design program I have used (both HTML and WYSIWYG) have been set up that way, some developed many years ago.

Anyhow, we wait for an update!

I've just joined the forums to investigate this issue. I also think it's a fundamental problem, having just overwritten a site in error

as I hadn't even considered the possibility that there would just be one global setting for ftp. I can't see it's a security issue as the ftp locations could just be stored locally with the application rather than in the web document or give the user the option, or password protect the publish functions or....

I'm sure there are many options. But to use the Application with several sites, as it stands, I can't see any option but to always use an FTP client.

When the 'Publish to FTP Site' button is depressed, a 'Please Confirm' dialogue prompt is shown that shows the last FTP server address, user name and path setting used, this is where your current site will be publish to if you continue. This dialogue always shows.
I can see that it would be easy to overwrite the wrong site if no notice was taken at this point. However I'd suggest that until Xara introduce a site manager feature, that simple care be taken before pressing the final 'Publish' button

Perhaps it's better to use a specialised FTP/SFTP/SCP tool for your website(s)?

WinSCP is a great software which allows you, to save login data for any numbers of servers. WinSCP is Open Source.

You could export your project with the help of your HTML editor and after that you would use the file synchronisation mechanism of WinSCP in order to publish only the changed files/directories.

WinSCP looks pretty good Remi, I am so used to using an FTP client for years (FileZilla) that I only use WD's built in FTP publishing for testing purposes.
However, I do agree that for many people, a simple site manager for Web Designer would be a natural thing to include.
I wager it will be included at some stage

FileZilla is also a great software. I have some customers who don't allow transfers via FTP (security reasons), therefore I use WinSCP most of the time, which offers SCP instead.
